What is a postage receipt?

A postage receipt is proof of mailing and delivery that is available for domestic Certified Mail, Insured mail (for more than $50), Registered Mail, and Express mail to some countries. It shows the recipient’s signature and the date of delivery. It can also be used for sending items to addresses outside the United States that require Certified Mail, Registered or Insured service.



Return Receipt

A return receipt is an additional service that provides proof of mailing and delivery for domestic Certified Mail, Insured mail for more than $50, Registered Mail, or Express mail to some countries. It shows the sender’s name and address, who signed for the item, the date of delivery and is available in either a physical or electronic format.


USPS Special Service that provides a return receipt and proof of mailing, plus a printed report that includes postage, acceptance of the mail piece by USPS, in-route tracking, and a final delivery date and time or a delivery attempt record for 10 years. It also contains an electronic Proof of Acceptance that posts soon after the mail piece is scanned by USPS.



The return receipt will be filed at Print & Mail Services and will be detached and mailed to the sender once the mail piece is delivered and signed for by the recipient. It is recommended to place the Certified Mail form in the top center and the Return Receipt in box 2 on the front of the envelope.
